Pocket WiFi vs eSIM for Japan: which one should you get?

We rent pocket WiFi routers and sell eSIMs, so we have no reason to push you to one or the other. Here is how they actually compare for a trip to Japan, and a simple rule for choosing.

When the eSIM is the better deal

For a solo traveller with a modern phone, the eSIM wins on price and convenience. A 6-day 20GB plan costs 2,480 JPY, you install it at home before departure, and there is nothing to charge, carry or post back. Twenty gigabytes covers a week of maps, translation, messaging, social media and a fair amount of video for most people. If you are a light user, go eSIM and don’t overthink it.

It is also the right choice if you land late at night or arrive somewhere we can’t deliver the same day, because it works the moment your plane lands.

When the pocket WiFi is the better deal

The maths changes as soon as a second person appears. One pocket WiFi at 610 JPY per day connects everyone in the family, so for a couple or a group it usually costs less per person than eSIMs for each phone, and nobody has to fiddle with their settings. It is the only option for a phone that is carrier-locked or too old for eSIM, which is still common.

The bigger reason is data. eSIM “unlimited” plans in Japan almost always mean a daily cap followed by slow speeds; our pocket WiFi has no cap at all. If you work on the road, upload photos and video, stream in the hotel or run a laptop off your connection, you will feel the difference by day three. Add a rental phone or Talk SIM and you also get a Japanese number for restaurant bookings and deliveries, which no data eSIM provides.

What about doing both?

Plenty of our customers do: an eSIM on the phone for the moments you step away from the group, and one pocket WiFi for the family, the laptop and the heavy lifting. If you order both from us, the eSIM is emailed immediately and the router meets you at the hotel or airport.
