Setting up takes about 10 minutes. Follow the steps below in order and you will be online in Japan. If you get stuck at any point, we are here to help.

Before you start: 3 quick checks
Connect to Wi-Fi
The setup downloads your eSIM over the internet. Use hotel, home or airport Wi-Fi. You can set it up before you fly.
Unlocked, eSIM-ready phone
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and support eSIM (iPhone XS / XR or newer, Pixel 3 or newer, Galaxy S20 or newer and most recent models).
Keep our setup email
We email you a setup link after your order. Keep that email until your trip is over, and do not delete the eSIM from your phone once it is installed.
Step 1 – Create your activation code
Open the setup link in our email
Tap the link and select “Create activation code”.
Wait a moment
Your request is sent and the code is created automatically — usually within 15 minutes. You can leave the page open.
Weekly maintenance: Tuesday 22:00 to Wednesday 9:00 (JST). During this time creating the code can take longer. Please be patient.
Your code appears at the top of the page
You will see the SM-DP+ Address and the Activation Code, each with a Copy button, and a QR code button.
Important – please read
The activation code can be used only once. If you delete the installed eSIM, the code cannot be reissued.
Install the eSIM within 44 days after creating the code.
Your plan starts automatically 45 days after the code was created, even if you have not finished the setup. So create the code close to your trip, not months ahead.
Step 2 – Install the eSIM on your phone
Choose your phone. Menu names can differ slightly by model and OS version, but the steps are the same. Tip: if the setup page is open on another screen (a laptop or tablet), you can press “QR code” there and scan it with the phone instead of copying and pasting.
iPhone: install
Open the eSIM menu
Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → Enter Details Manually
Paste your details
On the setup page tap Copy next to the SM-DP+ Address and paste it, then do the same for the Activation Code. Leave “Confirmation Code” empty.
“Add Cellular Plan” appears Done
Follow the on-screen prompts. On iPhone the eSIM connects to the internet without any APN setting in most cases.
That’s it for iPhone. When the signal bars appear for the new line, you are connected. This can take a few minutes. Want to share data with a laptop (Personal Hotspot)? See below.
Check it under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management (iOS 12.2–14: Settings → General → Profile).
Only one APN profile can be installed per phone. If you have a profile from another SIM provider, delete it first.
Android: install
Open the eSIM menu
Settings → Mobile Network → eSIM → switch “On” → Add eSIM → Next → Help (bottom of the screen) → Enter details manually
On Pixel / Samsung the menu may be called “SIMs” or “SIM manager” → “Add eSIM”.
Paste the activation code
Tap Copy on the setup page and paste the whole code, starting with “1$”. Then tap Download.
“Valid IIJ” appears
Tap Complete.
Turn the eSIM on
Switch on “Use SIM” and tap Yes.
Android: set the APN (required)
On Android you must add the APN. Installing the eSIM alone does not connect to the internet. It takes one minute:
Open Access Point Names
Select “Access Point Names” under the eSIM you just downloaded.
Tap “+”
Tap the + at the top right of the screen to add a new APN.
Enter these details and save

Save from the ⋮ menu, then make sure the new “ppsim” APN is selected.
Signal bars appear Done
This can take a few minutes.
That’s it for Android. Tethering works with the same APN, no extra setting needed.
Step 3 – Check that it works
The network name in the status bar shows “IIJ” and signal bars (4G / LTE / 5G) appear.
Turn Wi-Fi off and open any web page. If it loads, you are all set.
If you have two SIMs, choose the Japan eSIM for mobile data. You can keep your home SIM on for calls and SMS.
Troubleshooting
The eSIM is installed but there is no internet.
Android: check that the APN (ppsim.jp, pp@sim, jpn, PAP or CHAP) is entered exactly and selected. iPhone: install the APN profile from https://sim4.me/ppsim/. On both, make sure the eSIM is chosen for mobile data, then switch Airplane Mode on and off or restart the phone. If it still does not connect, turn on “Data Roaming” for the eSIM line. The plan is prepaid, so this never creates extra charges.
My activation code has not appeared yet.
Creating the code usually takes up to 15 minutes. During the weekly maintenance (Tuesday 22:00 to Wednesday 9:00 JST) it can take longer. Please wait and reload the setup page. If nothing appears after an hour, contact us.
Can I set it up before I travel?
Yes. Install it at home on Wi-Fi a few days before your trip, and it connects once you are in Japan. Remember that the plan starts automatically 45 days after the code is created.
I deleted the eSIM by mistake.
The activation code can be used only once and cannot be reissued after the eSIM has been deleted. Please do not delete or reset the eSIM during your trip. If it happened, contact us and we will check what we can do.
The setup says “Cellular plan cannot be added” or similar.
Your phone may be carrier-locked or not support eSIM. Check with your carrier that the phone is unlocked. You can email us your phone model and we will help.
Can I use Personal Hotspot / tethering?
Yes, tethering is allowed. On iPhone, enter the APN under “Personal Hotspot” in Cellular Data Network (see above). On Android, the same APN works for tethering.
Can I make phone calls?
No, the eSIM is data-only. Use WhatsApp, LINE, FaceTime and other apps for calls and messages. Your home SIM can stay on for calls and SMS.
