Why a plug-in router instead of a pocket WiFi

A pocket WiFi is the right tool for sightseeing. For a monthly apartment, a working-holiday stay, a semester abroad, a business assignment or a family visiting relatives, a plug-in home router is usually better: stronger signal through walls, no battery to charge, a LAN port for a desk, and room for everyone’s devices.

Prices include tax and damage insurance. The L12 ships in a box rather than the return envelope, so its actual shipping cost is charged separately; a pocket WiFi ships for a flat 1,200 JPY round trip.

Frequently asked

Can I rent a home WiFi router in Japan without a contract?
Yes. The L12 is a rental, not a subscription: no contract, no credit check, no residence card, no cancellation fee. You pay for the days you book and can extend by email.
How fast is it?
Measured speeds are usually 30–100 Mbps, enough for HD video calls, streaming and several people working. It is a mobile network, so speed varies by building and time of day; it is not a substitute for a gigabit fibre line if you upload very large files all day.
Is the data really unlimited?
Yes. There is no daily or monthly cap and no throttling for normal use.
Does it work outside Tokyo?
Yes, nationwide on the WiMAX +5G / 4G LTE network. For addresses deep in the countryside or mountains, check the coverage map first or ask us with your address.
How do I return it?
Put the router, plug and cable back in the box and send it back by Japan Post on or before the day after your rental ends. The return instructions and address are in the box.
Can I have it before I arrive?
Yes. Order from overseas with a delivery date and we deliver it to the apartment, hotel or a friend’s address on that day. In Tokyo and the Kanto area we can also deliver the same day.
