How much does pocket WiFi rental cost in Japan?

In 2026 an unlimited pocket WiFi from an online rental company costs roughly 400–1,000 JPY per day for a one-week trip, plus 0–1,500 JPY for delivery or return. Monthly rentals fall to about 250–450 JPY per day. Airport counters and shops in town are dearer, and “from” prices in adverts usually apply to capped plans or long rentals.

Five things to check before you book

1. “Unlimited” or a daily cap? Many “unlimited” plans slow to near-unusable speeds after 1–3 GB in a day, which a couple sharing video and maps can hit by mid-afternoon. Ask for the fair-use policy in writing on the price page.
2. The all-in priceAdd delivery, return shipping, insurance (often 300–500 JPY/day extra) and any deposit. A 500 JPY/day headline can be 900 JPY/day at checkout.
3. Where you collect and returnAirport pick-up means finding the counter with your luggage after a long flight; hotel delivery means it is waiting for you. Returns by prepaid envelope in any post box are the least hassle; a specific airport counter at 6am is not.
4. How fast can they get it to you? Most companies need 1–3 days’ notice. If you are already in Japan, look for same-day delivery. In Tokyo we deliver within 3 hours in the 23 wards and the same evening across Kanto.
5. Network and batterySoftBank and docomo LTE cover almost everywhere including subways; WiMAX +5G is fastest in cities but weaker in the mountains. A router lasts 8–13 hours; for a full day out take the charger or a power bank.

When you don’t need a pocket WiFi at all

If you are travelling alone with an unlocked, eSIM-capable phone and use a normal amount of data, a Japan eSIM from 2,480 JPY is cheaper and there is nothing to carry or return. Pocket WiFi wins when two or more people share, when you bring a laptop, when your phone is locked, or when you need truly unlimited data. The full comparison is on our Pocket WiFi vs eSIM page. For stays of a month or more in one apartment, a plug-in home router is better value than either.
